How a Website Earns and Converts Visitors
Three of the four capabilities a working website needs happen in sequence, in a visitor's first few seconds: being found by a search, understanding what's being offered without asking anyone, and having an obvious next step to take. Each is a distinct piece of work, and a site that's strong at one is often weak at another — which is why they need to be designed for individually, not assumed to follow from good visual design.
Be found: reaching people who haven't heard of the business
Being found is mostly structural, not creative: pages need to exist for the actual questions people search, load fast enough that search engines don't penalize them, and be marked up so search engines understand what they're about. None of this is about persuasive copy — it's the plumbing that determines whether persuasive copy ever gets read.
Answer the visitor: making the case without a person present
Once someone arrives, the site has to do the job a salesperson would do in person: state clearly what the business does, for whom, and why it's credible — in the order a skeptical stranger actually needs the information, not the order that's easiest to write. A page that requires a visitor to already understand the business to make sense of it has failed this capability regardless of how it looks.
Take the next step: turning interest into an action
A visitor who's convinced but doesn't know what to do next is a lost visitor. This capability is about having exactly one clear, low-friction action available at the moment interest peaks — not a wall of equally-weighted links competing for attention, and not a form so long it costs more effort than the visitor's interest can justify yet.
None of these three capabilities is about tricking a visitor into acting sooner than they're ready. A site that's honest about what it offers and easy to act on when someone is ready converts better than one that pressures — the same restraint every surface on this site follows.
Once a visitor takes that action, the fourth capability — handing it to the system that acts on it — is what determines whether the interest gets followed up or sits in an inbox. See the pillar page for how the fourth capability connects to the rest, and the Lead Follow-up cluster for what happens to a captured lead after that.
